Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program 2025–2026

Grand Prize: $35,000 Scholarship
Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 26,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and awards. Students participate by writing and recording an original 3–5 minute audio essay that reflects the annual patriotic theme.
Who Can Enter?

Students in grades 9–12 (public, private, parochial, or homeschool) by the October 31 deadline.

Dependents of U.S. military or civilian personnel in overseas schools are eligible.

How to Enter

Write your original essay (typed).

Record your essay in your own voice (3–5 minutes, within ±5 seconds).

Submit your audio file, typed essay, and completed entry form to your local VFW Post.

Judging Criteria

Originality (35 points): Creative, imaginative, human interest.

Content (30 points): Clear, organized, fully developed ideas.

Delivery (35 points): Speak clearly and confidently, showing personal connection to the theme.
All entries must be received by October 31, 2025 at the local VFW Post level. Winners advance through district and state competitions, with the chance to compete nationally.
